    How Statin Medications Works? Statins are medications used to reduce high levels of cholesterol. Statins: Therapeutic Category:  AntiHyperlipidaemia , Drug Category:  HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. These are prescription medicines used to bring down high cholesterol level to normal. Statins works by decreasing  LDL  (low-density lipoprotein) or bad cholesterol  and by increasing HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol. LDL is bad lipoprotein produced inside arteries. HDL is good   lipoprotein because it helps by bringing cholesterol to liver, which removes it out of the body. Statins effects the cholesterol synthesis in liver by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG CoA reductase , needed to create cholesterol.
