How Statin Medications Works?
Statins are
medications used to reduce high levels of cholesterol.
Statins:
Therapeutic Category: AntiHyperlipidaemia, Drug Category: HMG CoA reductase inhibitors.
These are
prescription medicines used to bring down high cholesterol level to
normal.
Statins works by decreasing LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or bad cholesterol and by increasing HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol. LDL is bad lipoprotein produced inside arteries.
HDL is good lipoprotein because it helps by bringing cholesterol to liver, which removes it out of the body.
Statins
effects the cholesterol synthesis in liver by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG CoA
reductase, needed to create
cholesterol. Our body makes 75% of our cholesterol, so by affecting the
synthesis of cholesterol in liver can make a big difference. Rest of our body’s
cholesterol is from what we’re eating.

Higher
level of cholesterol in blood leading to narrowing of the arteries by making
Plaque formation (obstacles), these plaques are unstable and can break down and
flow with bloodstream, which may cause blockage of artries, leading to heart
attack.
